Picot-Edged Baby Hat to Crochet

I have been making a lot of baby and little kid things recently – could there be a related project on the way you ask? Maybe, maybe not I say…

Free crochet pattern - Picot-edged Baby Hat with video tutorial on how to make the picots.

Anyway I have been thinking recently about picots. Most of us were taught to chain 3, then slip stitch in the 3rd chain from hook. Some of used the front of the chain, some the back or bump, but while those work well for lacy things like doilies or garlands/ornaments, I don’t think they are a durable as they might be. For this baby hat, I wanted a cute picot edging that would stand up to a little more abuse from washing and wearing, so I anchored my picots in the side of the stitch before, like so:

Here’s the chain three before the picot…

I have rotated the work a quarter turn clockwise and inserted my hook around the throat of the previous sc…

And finished up the slip stitch.

Those are some consistent and sturdy picots!

And here is a video to help you on your way –

Now here is a pattern so you can use your new skills!
