Sometimes, you just want to make a square! But you could also adapt this pattern to make a different size square, or upsize it to make a baby or even an adult sized throw. It’s a fun, easy pattern to work on, and will introduce you to front post stitches if you aren’t comfortable with those yet. I could even see this being a project in which the A color is a consistent color but the in between rows are crocheted up using stash!

Finished Size: 12″ square
3 shades of worsted weight yarn. Sample was made in Red Heart With Love (100% acrylic), colorways Deep Blues (A), White (B), and Bluebell (C)
Crochet hook size J/9/6.00mm hook or size needed to obtain gauge
Gauge: 12 sts x 12 rows = 4″/10 cm in pattern st
Special Stitches: fptr – front post treble crochet – yo twice, insert hook from right to left around throat of dc 3 rows below, yo, draw around st, (yo, draw through 2 loops on hook) 3 times
Note: When changing colors at the end of the row, make last yo of last st in the new color.
Ch – chain
Dc – Double crochet
Fptr – Front post treble crochet
Sc – single crochet
Rep – repeat
RS – right side

With A, ch 37.
Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Change to B, ch 1, turn. 35 dc
Row 2: Sc in each dc across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in each sc across. Change to A, ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc in each of first 3 sc, *fptr in dc 3 rows below, sc in each of next 3 sc. Rep from * to end. Ch 3, turn.
Row 5: Dc in each st across. Change to C, ch 1, turn.
Rows 6 – 7: With C, rep rows 2 – 3.
Row 8: With A, sc in first sc, fptr in dc 3 rows below, *sc in each of next 3 sc, fptr in dc 3 rows below. Rep from * across to last sc, sc in last sc. Ch 3, turn.
Row 9: Rep Row 5. Change to B, ch 1, turn.
Rep Rows 2 – 9 for pattern 3 more times, do not end off.
Continuing with A, sc around square placing 3 sc in each corner. Join rnd with sl st in first sc. End off.
Weave in ends. Block if desired.
