Broken Key Hat

Worked from the bottom up this graphic hat features a ribbed brim, tapestry crochet band featuring a partial Greek Key pattern, and a double crochet crown.

Finished Sizes: S (L) – 18 1/2 (20 3/4)” in circumference

Gauge: 12 sts x 14 rows = 4” in tapestry sc

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn in two colors. Model Shown in Premier Anti Pilling Everyday Worsted (100% Anti-pilling acrylic/100g/180yds) in Burgundy (A) and Clay (B)

Crochet hooks size H//8/5.00mm and I/9/5.50mm or sizes needed to obtain gauge

Abbreviations:

Beg-ch – beginning chain

Ch – chain

Dc – double crochet

Dc2tog – double crochet 2 together, a decrease

Rep – repeat

Sc – single crochet

ScBLO – Single crochet in the Back Loop Only

Sl st – slip stitch

St(s) – stitch(es)

Pattern Notes:

Color chart is worked tapestry style, crocheting over the unused yarn color, not creating any floats.

Change color by making the last yarn over of the last stitch of the old color in the new color.

Ch-3 counts as 1 dc.

Brim:

With A, and smaller hook ch 6, leaving about a 10” tail for sewing up later

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each remaining ch. Ch 1, turn. 5 sc

Row 2: Sc BLO in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Rep Row 2 for pattern until work measures 18 1/2 (20 3/4)” .

Orient work so that the first and last rows are next to each other forming a ring, join with sl st in end of first row.

Colorwork Section:

Set-up Rnd: Continuing with A, ch 1, work 56 (64) sc evenly spaced around long edge of brim. Join rnd with sl st in first sc. 56 (64) sc

Change to larger hook, work 9 rounds of chart, always reading stitches from right to left (see Pattern Notes), end off B after Round 8.

Crown:

Rnd 1: With A, ch 3, dc in each sc around. Join rnd with sl st in top of beg-ch. 56 (64) sc

Rnds 2 – 3: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join rnd with sl st in top of beg-ch.

Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in each of next 4 (5) dc, dc2tog, *dc in each of next 5 (6) dc, dc2tog. Rep from * around. Join rnd with sl st in top of beg-ch. 48 (56) dc

Size Small only skip to Rnd 6.

Size Large only:

Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in each of next 4 dc, dc2tog, *dc in each of next 5 dc, dc2tog. Rep from * around. Join rnd with sl st in top of beg-ch. (48) dc

Both Sizes:

Rnd 6: Ch 3, dc in next dc, dc2tog, *dc in each of next 2 dc, dc2tog. Rep from * around. Join rnd with sl st in top of beg-ch. 36 dc both sizes

Rnd 7: Ch 3, dc2tog, *dc in next dc, dc2tog. Rep from * around. Join rnd with sl st in top of beg-ch. 24 dc

Rnd 8: Ch 2, dc in next dc (these two sts together count as first dc2tog), *dc2tog. Rep from * around. Sk beg-ch, join rnd in first dc. (12 dc) End off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Finishing:

Using tail from foundation chain, sew first and last rounds of Brim together.

Using tail from last round, weave in and out of last 12 sts and pull tight to draw the circle closed. Fasten off securely.

Weave in all ends.
