Crochet Snowman Ornament

Last blog post I did a Dollar Tree challenge, making a crafty advent calendar garland with stuff I got there. While I was there I saw this cute top hat ornament, which led me to this little guy – I love him!

Purchase a clear ball ornament and the top hat ornament, then crochet a cover for the ball, embroider some details, and you are all set to go!

Materials:

1 skein white worsted weight yarn (CYCA 4, Medium). Model shown in Caron Simply Soft Party (Amazon affiliate link) because I liked the sparkle!

Small amounts black and orange yarn for facial features

Tapestry needle

Decorated Top Hat felt ornament (I got mine at Dollar Tree)

4” clear glass or plastic ornament (also Dollar Tree)

Clear glue (e6000 or hot glue)

Crochet hook size 4.50 mm or size needed to obtain gauge

Thin box cutter or other craft knife

Stitch marker

Gauge: 16 sts x 15 rows = 4″ in sc, slightly stretched

Notes: Rounds are not joined and started with ch-1s, but worked in a spiral with no join. Make sure to mark first st of each rnd to keep track.

Snowman:

Start with a Magic Ring.

Rnd 1: Work 6 sc (dc) in ring. Mark first st, and make sure to move marker up every round. 6 sc (dc)

Rnd 2: Work 2 sc (dc) in each sc (dc) around. 12 sc (dc)

Rnd 3: *Work 2 sc (dc) in next sc (dc), work 1 sc (dc) in next sc (dc). Rep from * around. 18 sc (dc)

Rnd 4: *Work 2 sc (dc) in next sc (dc), work 1 sc in each of next 2 sc (dc). Rep from * around. 24 sc (dc)

Rnd 5: *Work 2 sc (dc) in next sc (dc), work 1 sc in each of next 3 sc (dc). Rep from * around. 30 sc (dc)

Rnd 6: Sc (dc) in each sc (dc) around.

Rnd 7: *Work 2 sc (dc) in next sc (dc), work 1 sc in each of next 4 sc (dc). Rep from * around. 36 sc (dc)

Rnd 8: *Work 2 sc (dc) in next sc (dc), work 1 sc in each of next 5 sc (dc). Rep from * around. 42 sc (dc)

Rnd 9: *Work 2 sc (dc) in next sc (dc), work 1 sc in each of next 6 sc (dc). Rep from * around. 48 sc (dc)

Rnd 10: *Work 2 sc (dc) in next sc (dc), work 1 sc in each of next 7 sc (dc). Rep from * around. 54 sc (dc)

Rnds 11 – 15: Sc (dc) in each sc (dc) around.

At this point you may want to embroider on the mouth as shown in photo while it’s easy to reach! I used French knots, and a scrap of black worsted weight yarn.

Rnd 16: *Sc2tog (dc2tog), sc (dc) in each of next 7 sc (dc). Rep from * around. 48 sc

Rnd 17: *Sc2tog (dc2tog), sc (dc) in each of next 6 sc (dc). Rep from * around. 42 sc

This is a great time to stop and embroider the nose as shown in photo with a scrap of orange yarn.

Bring yarn up from underneath near the center of the mouth and the top row where the top of the carrot nose should be.

Bring it down approximately 1 ¾” (4 cm) to the left and 4 rows below, pulling taut but not too tight.

Bring it up again 1 row below and slightly to the right of where you first brought the needle up, then down again in the same space you went down into last time.

Bring it up 1 thread away from where you brought it down both times (so it doesn’t pull out) and weave the nose by bringing the needle up to the right of the right-hand orange thread (you aren’t catching the white stitching any more, just weaving on the surface), down between the two orange threads, up to the left of the left-hand orange thread, down between the two orange threads. Repeat weaving in and out, alternating right side and left side, until the space between the two orange threads is full. Bring the need down to the wrong side of the crochet work and fasten off.

Rnd 18: *Sc2tog (dc2tog), sc (dc) in each of next 5 sc (dc). Rep from * around. 36 sc (dc)

Rnd 19: *Sc2tog (dc2tog), sc (dc) in each of next 4 sc (dc). Rep from * around. 30 sc (dc)

Rnd 20: Sc (dc) in each sc (dc) around.

Rnd 21: *Sc2tog (dc2tog), sc (dc) in each of next 3 sc (dc). Rep from * around. 24 sc (dc)

Rnd 22: *Sc2tog (dc2tog), sc (dc) in each of next 2 sc (dc). Rep from * around. 18 sc (dc)

Rnd 23: *Sc2tog (dc2tog), sc (dc) in next sc (dc). Rep from * around. 12 sc (dc)

End off, leaving a long tail.

Eyes: Make 2:

With scrap of black yarn, make a Magic Ring start. Work 6 sc (dc) in ring. Join rnd with sl st in first sc (dc). Fasten off.

Finishing:

Thread white yarn tail into tapestry needle. Weave tail in and out of last rnd of sc (dc), pull it tight around top opening of ornament, fasten off.

Glue eyes into place as shown in photo.

Using the box cutter or other craft knife, carve a hole in the bottom of the top hat as shown in photo below, just large enough for the top opening of the clear ornament to fit into.

Glue top hat on top of snowman.

Use scrap yarn, ribbon, or a purchased ornament hook to create hanger.
