Toddler Grandpa Sweater

You know those cardigans that Grandpa always wore? Maybe with the leather elbow patches? Those were the inspiration for this adorable crocheted toddler sweater. The shaping is simple, and the front post stitch cables add just the right touch!

Gauge: 11 sts and 9 rows = 4” [10 cm] in hdc

MATERIALS

Yarn: Premier Yarns Everyday Worsted (100% Acrylic; 203 yards [186 meters]/113 grams): #100-14 Caramel (2 (3, 3) balls) CYCA 4, Medium

Hook: US size J/10 (6.00 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: 5 (5, 6) 7/8” buttons, 4 stitch markers, tapestry needle

SPECIAL STITCHES

C2F: Sk next bpdc, fpdc in next bpdc, fpdc in skipped bpdc.

Hdcdec: Yo, insert hook from front to back in next 2 sts, yo, draw through both sts, yo, draw through all 3 lps on hook.

PATTERN NOTES 

Ch-2 counts as 1 hdc.

For the hdc decrease, it looks much better if you do the invisible one described (hdcdec) instead of the traditional hdc2tog.

PATTERN

Back

Ch 35 (38, 41).

Row 1 (WS): Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 2, turn. (34 (37, 40) hdc)

Row 2 (RS): Hdc in next hdc, *fpdc in next hdc, hdc in next dc; rep from * across to last st, hdc in last st. Ch 2, turn.

Row 3: Hdc across. Ch 2, turn.

Rep Row 3 for patt until piece meas 7 (8, 9)”. Ch 1, turn after last row.

Armhole

Row 1: Sl st in first 4 (all sizes) hdc, ch 2, hdc across until 3 (all sizes) sts rem, leave rem sts unworked. Ch 2, turn. (28 (31, 34) hdc)

Row 2: Hdc hdc across. Ch 2, turn.

Rep Row 2 for patt until piece meas 4 (4.5, 5)” from start of armhole, ending with a WS row.

Neck Edge
