Tangerine Dream Tunisian Lap or Baby Blanket

One of my favorite colorwork tricks is to use a yarn with a slow color repeat in tandem with a coordinating solid on stitch patterns that are traditionally worked in two colors. The multi-colored yarn runs through its color pattern slowly giving you a lovely, usually subtle, ombre effect.

Finished Size: 35” square including edging; 32” square without.

Materials:

Approx 1,000 yd worsted weight yarn (CYCA 4, Medium). Blanket can be made in two colors as shown, or one color if preferred. Model shown in Caron One Pound in #10504 Peach (A) and Caron Jumbo Ombre #19002 Salmon (B).

Tunisian crochet hook size K/10.5/6.5 mm or size needed to obtain gauge.

Traditional crochet hook size K/10.5/6.5 mm for edging, or you can use your Tunisian hook if you prefer.

Gauge:

12 sts × 12 rows = 4” in pattern

Abbreviations:

Approx – approximately

ch – chain

dc – double crochet

Rep – Repeat

Rnd – Round

sc – single crochet

sl st – slip stitch

sp – space

st(s) – stitch(es)

TFS – Tunisian Full Stitch 

TSS – Tunisian Simple Stitch

TPS – Tunisian Purl Stitch

yo – yarn over

Special Stitches:

Tunisian Simple Stitch 2 together (decrease) – TSS2tog – on the forward pass, insert your hook through 2 sts at the same time as if to TSS, draw up a loop.

End Stitch: On the forward pass, insert your hook under the last vertical bar and the strand behind it, yo, draw through both strands.

Notes:

All Tunisian rows use a Standard Return Pass in the colors as noted; all color changes happen on the left-hand side of the work.

Standard Return Pass: Ch 1, *yo, draw through 2 loops on hook. Rep from * across until only 1 loop remains.

Blanket:

With A, ch 96.

Row 1 forward: Insert hook in second ch from hook and draw up a loop, insert hook in each ch across and draw up a loop. 96 sts

Row 1 return: With B, work Standard Return.

Row 2 forward: With B, *TSS2tog, TFS in sp immediately following. Rep from * across until 1 st remains, end stitch.

Row 2 return:  With A, work Standard Return.

Row 3 forward: With A, *TPS, TSS. Rep from * across until 1 st remains, end st.

Row 3 return: With B, work Standard Return.

Rep Rows 2 & 3 for pattern until work measures 32” or desired length, ending with a Row 2.

Final Row: With A, work 1 row TSS forward and return. Do not end off.

Edging:

Switch to traditional crochet hook if desired.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc across top of blanket working through vertical bars as if to TSS, 3 sc in corner, sc down side of work placing 1 sc in each end st, 3 sc in corner, sc across bottom of blanket working in opposite side of foundation ch, 3 sc in corner, sc up side of work placing 1 sc in each row, 3 sc in corner. Join rnd with sl st in first sc. 392 sc

Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in each sc around, placing 5 dc in each corner st. Join rnd with sl st in top of beg-ch. 408 dc

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in each dc around, placing 3 sc in each corner st. Join rnd with sl st in first sc. 416 sc

Rnd 4: Sl st in each st around. Join rnd with sl st in in first sl st. End off.

Block and weave in all ends.
