Striations Market Bag

Four Corner to Corner (C2C) crochet panels turn into this C2C crochet market bag, even though you never work in the round except for the top edging! It’s an unusual way to make a bag, and once you have learned the process you can do all sort of variations with size and colors.

Finished Size: The “box” on the bottom is about 9 ½” square, and it is also about 9 ½” from the box edge to the lowest point of the top edge. Laid flat the bag is approximately 13” from the center of the bottom to the lowest point of the top edge, and approximately 18” across.

Materials: Approximately 600 yds worsted weight cotton in three colors. Model shown in Big Twist Cotton (85% cotton/15% polyester; 55g; 107 yds), 3 skeins Denim Splash (A), 2 skeins Raindrop Splash (B) and 1 skein Coral Splash.

Crochet hook size 4.5mm or size needed to get a firm fabric – cotton stretches out with use.

Tapestry needle.

Wonder Clips or pins.

Gauge: 4 blocks = 3 ¾” square, but gauge is not critical for this pattern

Notes:

Corner to Corner is made in blocks, diagonally.

There are increase rows in which blocks are added, decrease rows in which blocks eliminated, and for work even rows the number of blocks remain the same but that is accomplished by increasing a block on one side of the row and decreasing a block on the other side of the row.

Each block contains 4 dc (3 dc + ch-3)

Ch-3 counts as 1 dc.

Make and Do Crew has a wonderfully detailed post on the ins and outs of corner to corner crochet if you need more information.

Bag Panel: Make 4:

Increase Section:

With A, ch 6.

Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each of next 2 ch. 1 block

Row 2: Ch 6, turn, dc in 4th ch from hook and in each of next 2 ch,  sk 3 dc, sl st between 3rd dc from hook and ch-3, ch 3, 3 dc around post of that same ch-3. 2 blocks

Row 3: Ch 6 turn, dc in 4th ch from hook and in each of next 2 ch,  sk 3 dc, (sl st between 3rd dc from hook and ch-3, ch 3, 3 dc around post of that same ch-3) twice. 3 blocks

Rows 4 – 7: Rep Row 3, working the instructions in the parentheses one more time for each subsequent row. 7 blocks after Row 7.

Work Even Section:

Row 1:  Ch 6 turn, dc in 4th ch from hook and in each of next 2 ch,  sk 3 dc, (sl st between 3rd dc from hook and ch-3, ch 3, 3 dc around post of that same ch-3) 6 times, ch 1, turn, sl st in each of next 3 dc and between last dc and ch-3. 7 blocks

Row 2: Ch 3, 3 dc around post of that same ch-3, (sl st between 3rd dc from hook and ch-3, ch 3, 3 dc around post of that same ch-3) 6 times. 7 blocks

Rep Rows 1 – 2 for pattern working next 3 rows in B, then 3 rows C, 3 rows B, 2 rows A.

Decrease Section:

Row 1: Continuing on with A, ch 1, turn, sl st in each of next 3 dc and between last dc and ch-3, ch 3, 3 dc around post of that same ch-3, (sl st between 3rd dc from hook and ch-3, ch 3, 3 dc around post of that same ch-3) 6 times, sl st between 3rd dc from hook and ch-3. 6 blocks

Rep Row 1, working the instructions in parentheses 1 less time for each subsequent row until only 2 blocks are in the row.

Last Block: Ch 1, turn, sl st in each of next 3 dc and between last dc and ch-3, ch 3, 3 dc around post of that same ch-3, sl st between 3rd dc from hook and ch-3. End off.  1 block

Finishing and Assembly:

Orient the panels as shown in the photo, making sure the start of each panel is toward the center, and the orientation of the diagonal is the same on each panel. Using the tapestry needle and a whip stitch, sew the four panels together to form the boxed bottom of the bag.

Take each panel side and pin or clip it to the adjacent panel side, noting they are not the same length – the longer sides form the points for the bag straps. Sew each seam together with a whip stitch.

Edging:

Work 1 rnd sc around upper edge of assembled bag, working an sc3tog in each valley/low point and 3 sc in each peak/high point. Join rnd with sl st to first sc, end off.

Straps: Make 2:

With A, ch 6.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 3, turn. 5 sc

Row 2: Dc in each sc across. Ch 3, turn. 5 dc

Row 3: Dc in each dc across. Ch 3, turn.

Rep Row 3 until strap measures 28” or desired length; ch 1, turn at end of last dc row.

Last Row:

Sc in each dc across. End off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sewing each strap end to a point, placing each end of one strap on the points that are diagonally across from each other.

Weave in all remaining ends.
