Finished Size:

11 1/2” wide at widest point x 8 1/4” tall measured from center of zipper to finished bottom of bag.

Materials:

Circulo Natural yarn – (100% virgin Brazilian cotton, put up varies, light worsted weight) 1 ball each Natural/undyed (A) and #9391 Green Mulit (B)

Crochet hook size 4.5mm or size needed to obtain gauge

9” metal tooth zipper

Pointy yarn needle

Gauge: 11 sts x 15 rows = 4” in spike st pattern. Gauge not critical but you want a dense fabric so things don’t fall out!

Special Stitches:

Sc1b – single crochet 1 below. Single crochet in the stitch below the next stitch.

NOTE: I did this purse by putting chain stitches directly on the zipper then crocheting my way down. If you do not want to do that you can begin by chaining 56 and setting up to work in the round. You will have to sew the zipper in after crocheting the bag though. Video tutorials below.

Purse:

Set-up: Using the tapestry needle and a strand of A work 26 chain embroidery stitches up each side of the zipper, and one long chain across each short side.

Rnd 1: Join A with a sc in either short side chain, sc in same ch, sc in each ch up one side of zipper, 2 sc in ch across other short side, sc in each ch down other side of zipper. Place marker in first st of rnd, move it up on each subsequent rnd. 56 sc

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each of first 2 sc, sc in next 27 sc, 2 sc next sc, sc in each sc to end of rnd. 59 sc

Rnds 3- 4: Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 5: With B, sc in next sc, *sc1b in next sc, sc in next sc. Rep from * around. Change to A in last st.

Rnd 6: With A, sc1b in next sc, *sc in next sc, sc1b in next sc. Rep from * around. Change to B in last st.

Rep Rnds 5 – 6 for pattern until work measures 5” from start of crochet. End off B.

Continue in st pattern as established, using A only, until work measures 7 1/2” from start of crochet. End off A.

Strap:

With A, ch 6.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 5 sc

Row 2: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Rep Row 2 for pattern until work measures 14” or desired length. End off.

Finishing:

Sew in zipper if you didn’t begin with the chains on the zipper.

Fold back flat, with A, sc bottom opening closed. End off.

Fold strap in half and sc across the bottom. End off leaving a long tail for sewing.

With yarn needle, sew strap into place on top/side of purse.

Weave in all ends.

  1. Crocheting chain stitches directly on the zipper tape in the best idea!! I’ve made purses, tote bags, and small bags like this but always sewed the zipper in at the end. I’m trying this. Thank you, thank you!!
