Framed Carnation Square

 

This free crochet afghan square finishes at 12”, is made in worsted weight yarn in three colors, and features a 3-D flower at its center.

Use scrap yarn for the center flower and consistent neutrals for the outer layers and you can have a whole garden of flowers for your home!

Finished Size: 12” square

Materials: Red Heart With Love in Cameo (A), White (B) and Pewter (C)

Crochet hook size J/10/6.0mm or size needed to obtain gauge.

Locking stitch marker

Notes:

Ch 3 counts as 1 dc.

You can adjust the size of your square if your gauge is a little bit off by changing the last round to a different height stitch.

Free Crochet Afghan Square:

With A, begin with a magic ring.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in ring. Place marker on first sc. 6 sc

Rnd 2: Working in front loop only, sl st in next sc, *ch 3, sl st in next sc. Rep from * around, placing last sl st in first sc of rnd. 6 ch-3 loops

Rnd 3: Working in back loop only of Rnd 1, 2 sc in each sc around. 12 sc

Rnd 4: Working in front loop only, sl st in next sc, * ch 4, sl st in next sc. Rep from * around placing last sl st in first sc of rnd. 12 ch-4 loops

Rnd 5: Working in back loop only of Rnd 3, *2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc. Rep from * around. 18 sc

Rnd 6: Working in front loop only, sl st in next sc, * ch 5, sl st in next sc. Rep from * around placing last sl st in first sc of rnd. 18 ch-5 loops

Rnd 7: Working in back loop only of Rnd 5, *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 2 sc. Rep from * around. Join rnd with sl st in first sc. End off A. 24 sc

Rnd 8: Join B with a sc in any st. (Sc in next sc, hdc in next sc, dc in next sc, ch 2, dc in next sc, hdc in next sc, sc in next sc) 4 times noting last rep will not have the final sc. Join rnd with sl st in first sc. 24 sts + 4 ch-2 corners.

Rnds 9 & 10: Ch 3, [dc in each st to corner ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ch-2 sp] 4 times, dc in each st to end of rnd. Join rnd with sl st in top of beg-ch-3. End off B. 40 dc after Rnd 9; 56 dc after Rnd 10

Rnd 11: Join C in any side st, working in front loop only work crab st/rev sc all the way around. Join yarn with sl st in first st.  End off C.

NOTE: You could continue on with C and not end off here but I think the crab stitch looks neater if you do.

Rnd 12: Working in back loop only of Rnd 10, join yarn with a sl st in any side st, ch 3, (dc in each dc to corner ch-2, 2 dc in next ch, ch 2, 2 dc in next ch) 4 times, dc in each dc to end. Join rnd with sl st in first dc. 72 dc

Rnds 13 & 14: Ch 3, [dc in each dc to corner ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ch-2 sp] 4 times, dc in each dc to end. Join rnd with sl st in first dc. End off after Rnd 14. 88 dc after Rnd 13; 104 dc after Rnd 14.

Rnds 15 – 17: With A, rep Rnds 11 – 13.

Weave in all ends.
